1. The Context for Business Process Modelling: The purpose and benefits of business process modelling for customers, staff, and the organisation. The three levels of the business process hierarchy- enterprise, event-response, and actor-task- their relationship and the difference in detail represented at each. The process view versus the functional view of an organisation, including advantages and disadvantages of each.
2. Modelling at the Enterprise Level: Interpreting organisational business process models- Porter’s Value Chain, Value Proposition, SIPOC, and Harmon’s Organisational Model. How enterprise-level processes support the delivery of the value proposition across product/service attributes, customer relationships, and image/reputation.
3. Modelling at the Event-Response Level: Interpreting the construction of a business process model and its elements- event, actor, task, swimlane, decision point, fork and join, outcome, process flow, and timeline. The importance of standard notation- UML and BPMN- and the consequences of disregarding conventions. Distinguishing between process, task, and step. OPOTOT- one person, one place, one time. Internal, external, and time-based business events. Process performance measures- financial, customer experience, and process efficiency.
4. Modelling at the Actor-Task Level: Constructing a full task description- name, actor, trigger event, inputs, outputs, costs, performance measures, steps, and business rules. Documenting steps and business rules using UML activity diagram notation and use case descriptions.
5. Analysing and Improving Business Processes: Analysing processes using customer journey maps and the wastes of lean using the TIMWOODS acronym.
