1. What Is Business Analysis? (5%) The business change lifecycle, the key principles of business analysis, and the variants of the BA role- Enterprise, Technical/Systems, Digital, Project, and Proxy Product Owner.

2. The Competencies of a Business Analyst (2.5%) The T-shaped professional concept and the three areas of BA competency: personal qualities, business knowledge, and professional techniques.

3. The Strategic Context for Business Analysis (7.5%) PESTLE analysis for the external environment, VMOST for the internal environment, CSFs, KPIs, SWOT analysis, and strategy execution tools including POPIT and the Business Model Canvas.

4. The Business Analysis Service Framework (2.5%) The seven activities in the BASF: situation investigation, feasibility assessment, business process improvement, requirements definition, business acceptance testing, business change deployment, and stakeholder engagement.

5. Investigating the Business Situation (12.5%) Workshops, observation, interviews, scenarios, prototyping, user role analysis, quantitative approaches, and diagrammatic techniques including rich pictures and mind maps.

6. Analysing and Managing Stakeholders (10%) The stakeholder wheel, the Power/Interest grid and resulting management strategies, and RACI charts.

7. Improving Business Services and Processes (12.5%) The business process hierarchy, SIPOC, value chain analysis, event-response and actor-task level modelling, UML activity diagrams, the as-is process model, approaches to process improvement, and customer journey maps.

8. Defining the Solution (7.5%) Gap analysis, POPIT in gap analysis, developing options, and design thinking stages.

9. Making the Business Case (5%) The business case lifecycle, feasibility assessment, business case structure, Agile business cases, the CARDI log, and investment appraisal techniques including payback and discounted cash flow.

10. Establishing the Requirements (10%) The requirements engineering framework, actors in requirements engineering, types of requirement, the requirements hierarchy, elicitation techniques, and requirements analysis including MoSCoW prioritisation.

11. Documenting and Modelling Requirements (10%) Documentation styles (text-based and diagrammatic), the requirements catalogue, user stories, use case diagrams, class models, product backlogs, and the business requirements document.

12. Validating and Managing Requirements (5%) Formal and Agile requirements validation, traceability, and change control.

13. Delivering the Requirements (5%) Waterfall, V model, incremental, and Agile delivery lifecycles- and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

14. Delivering the Business Solution (5%) The BA’s role across the business change lifecycle, the BA’s role during design, development, and test stages, approaches to implementation, and the benefits plan.

Question Weighting

The exam draws questions from each syllabus area in proportion to its weighting. The heaviest-weighted areas- Investigating the Business Situation (12.5%), Improving Business Services and Processes (12.5%), The Strategic Context (7.5%) and Establishing the Requirements (10%)- together account for nearly half the exam. The practice tests in this course are weighted to reflect these proportions.

On Exam Day

The Foundation exam is an invigilated online exam accessed at the date and time you are registered to attend. No materials may be taken into the exam.
